Sex Offender Hysteria

In 1692, in Salem, Massachusetts a mass hysteria gripped the population and over 150 people were arrested and imprisoned for being witches.  Even more were accused but not charged.

Law Books

The hysteria spread to surrounding towns, including Boston.  Nineteen people were hanged and one man, who refused to enter a plea, was crushed to death in an attempt to get him to plead.

What occurred has been been cited as an example of religious extremism, false accusations, lapse of due process and the intrusion of government on individual liberties.

Today another form of hysteria - sex offender hysteria - appears to be gripping towns across the US. Registries, residency restrictions, GPS monitoring and a lot of misinformation based on fear.

The Blog post below is one example of sex offender hysteria.  It is filled with misinformation that, if one took the time to do some simple research, would be easily refuted. Unfortunately this is not generally done and people who propagate such errors go unchallenged.

Guide to Understanding the Adult Sex Offender

Comments

It seems every generation the public needs some group to hate in the name of protectionism. Thanks to the internet, when it comes to sex offenders you can spread false information and scare others like never before. Many comments in the media or news article comment sections aren't grounded in any sort of science. Many times, these same people say sex offenders can never be cured. I don't even think that's the appropriate question, whether or not we sex offenders can be "cured". You don't cure sexuality or sexual behavior in any of its forms, you manage these behaviors. There are sex offenders who reoffend with a sex offense, yes, but its not to the epidemic proportions many are lead to believe. If that were the case, and with all of the many facets of protection parents and the public use to protect children, wouldn't we by now know about unseen daily rampage of child molestations by sex offenders?
To be blunt, many in the public don't know what they are talking about when it comes to sex offenders. They've never looked at an actuarial table, talked with a seasoned chief probation officer, or followed a sex offender for years after he has been adjudicated. But it's difficult and uncomfortable to have one's worldview questioned since it has been a cozy companion for years. Any sentiment falling short of "kill all child molesters" "and throw them in prison for life" could mean you are a sympathizer or a soft-on-crime liberal, right?
It will take time, but the hysteria has reached it's apogee, and a more realistic and effective conversation is taking place everywhere. It may take a few decades or so, but American's obsession and hysteria toward sex offenders will subside to a more rational state.

Frankly, I am not afraid to face the hate bloggers. They are blowing smoke and I have no problem with blowing their smoke away. People ask why we have sex offenders. My humble opinion is that humans have a wide repetoire of sexual responses. Our society decided that some of these were not OK (and rightfully so) but instead of taking a responsible approach to look at ourselves to assist those with difficulty complying, we decided to look the other way and hope it would disappear. Isn't that the definition of enabling? The hysteria is just smoke. People throwing around hate, ridicule, and in some cases violence because they don't want to look at themselves. It seems easier for them to project their guilt onto someone else than to consider that they have potential to be sex offenders themselves (and we all do!)

Well, I just think this is unacceptable. Hate mongers can't keep their hate in the face of a loving response. Fearful neighbors will stop lashing out when we choose to educate and show them that there is nothing to fear. And when the vigilante walks up to me and points a gun in my face, I will turn the other cheek.

I would have to agree with you on this one as well! People are so quick to hate the offender and often times the family of the offender like it's going to rub off on them! The public definitely has to be educated on this and I think that's the only way it could even help if they were willing to listen! That's the question! My neighbors were so angry and hating towards all of us but one other thing I did learn through all of this that when someone is so angry towards another person as a sex offender they have something to hide in their own life and this is a way of hiding by throwing it off on someone else.

People can be so cruel but what I find so offensive is when they treated my children like they were dirty and not worthy of anything. That was so hard to walk away from and not want to scream at them! I could take the ridicule at me but not at them as they are the innocent ones. Unless we someone takes a stand and tries to educate the public then I don't know if things will change. Even the public prosecutors probably have something in their past that haunts them and they take it against the offender which I think in our case happended but I believe that God intervened and made things better for us in the end.
